productive gardens

Our potager is based on permaculture principles, the use of Biodynamic preparations, compost, pea straw and aged chicken manure, which assist in making our garden productive.

The potager-style garden is a feature of French gardens where herbs, flowers, fruit trees and vegetables are inter-planted for both practical (companion planting) and aesthetic reasons. This style of planting has been around since medieval times.

Small spaces can be creatively used to make a productive and ornamental vegetable garden, with the use of structures such as pergolas and obelisks for plants to climb.

Having a productive garden allows you to be in tune with the seasons and plan your meals around what is growing at the time. The garden should be imaginative and appeal to the senses, notably sight, smell and taste.
